City-MPS student job training pipeline
The Water Works program hosting special-education high school students was extended through January 2028. Ald. Taylor pushed to replicate the model across all DPW divisions to fill city jobs.
2027 BID and NID operating plans
The city's 30 business improvement districts and 10 neighborhood improvement districts — funded by property assessments — got their 2027 operating plans advanced. These districts pay for home repairs in Sherman Park and Harambee, downtown cleaning and homeless outreach, the East Side's Ivanhoe Plaza, and workforce programs in Havenwoods. BID 27's plan was pulled for separate consideration.
Bronzeville Week 2027 designation
The committee recommended officially designating August 7-14, 2027 as Bronzeville Week, letting planning start early for next year's festival. This year's 16th annual event was the most attended ever, boosted by young creators ages 17-26 running their own events.
DNS occupancy permit requirement for license applicants
The committee cleared a wide slate of bar, restaurant, grocery and gas station licenses across Milwaukee — the standard process that lets local businesses legally operate. Most were routine renewals with no objections from police or neighbors.
AI virtual assistant for 286-CITY call center
The city is testing an AI voice assistant that answers routine 286-CITY calls in 75+ languages, aiming to cut wait times — last year one in four overnight calls was abandoned, with some callers waiting up to four hours. It won't replace staff, costs just $10,000 for the trial, and will triage duplicate streetlight-outage calls automatically.
Viva Nuestra Herencia official city event
The 16th Street festival celebrating Latino culture and commercial vibrancy becomes an official city event, letting it accept and spend contributions. Next event: Sunday, September 20, 1-6 p.m. between National and Greenfield.
Second District Back to School Festival funding
The committee recommends $10,000 from the Economic Development Committee Fund for the annual back-to-school festival on August 30 at Indigenous People Park, which served over 2,000 families with book bags, laptops and calculators last year.
Parklets and sidewalk dining permitting overhaul
The city plans to move parklet and Active Streets approvals from DPW into the licensing process, so neighbors within 250 feet get notice and can object — starting in 2027.
Sidewalk dining permit fees
The council passed a substitute ordinance updating sidewalk area dining permit fees for restaurants.
Public Works partnership with Wisconsin Community Services Agency
Public Works is extending temporary laborer appointments tied to a long-running partnership that helps people gain or recover driver's licenses while recruiting laborers and drivers. Commissioners praised the program.
Residents Preference Program underperformance
2025 projects all came in under the 40% resident-worker requirement, and the city's enforcement remedies weren't used. Members want the criteria for 'best efforts' judgments, DCD at future presentations, and targeted outreach in underperforming zip codes.
