Impact analysis
The Well #8 treatment project jumped from a $2 million estimate to $3.5 million; low-interest state loans would reduce borrowing costs but grants are unlikely.

Public Works Committee - Jun 11, 2026
Well #8 needs a $3.54 million treatment system — up from $2 million — and Well #12 also exceeds PFAS limits but may be abandoned and replaced with a new deep well instead. Nobody knows where the PFAS came from, and officials say tracking down the source should be DNR or EPA work, not the city's. Two other shallow wells show small detections.
Public Works Committee - Apr 23, 2026
The city needs two new wells right away — one collapsed and radium-contaminated, one PFAS-contaminated — and six to eight more over 50 years. A $37,500 study will pinpoint where wells can go, possibly outside city borders.
